Chapter Twenty

Before leaving for work on Thursday, Mutt used a pay phone to call Maggie and found out that eleven women from Bumpers had been arrested. As the owner, Ruby was also taken in. The rest, including everyone in her close circle of friends, had escaped. She was relieved to hear it. None of them would stay in jail long, but jail time wasn’t the real threat in a raid like this. For someone like Tully, exposure was the danger. If she had been arrested, she would have certainly lost her job at the hospital.

For a woman with a career, it seemed like the risk of going to Bumpers to have a few drinks was too great. But it was more than drinking and dancing, Mutt knew. It was a place to escape a hostile world and be with others like herself, and that was worth a lot. It was worth the risk to Tully and many others.

Standing at her post outside the door of the Rutherford Hotel, Mutt felt light-headed. The knot on her head had grown overnight. She thought she might have to go home and lie down. She’d never taken a sick day. She didn’t even know the terms of her employment contract, if sick days were allowed or how many. Feeling chilled, she pulled her collar higher around her neck. It would warm up as soon as the sun cleared the tops of the buildings, but this December morning had a distinctly winter feel about it. She smiled to think how soft she’d become. She remembered nearly freezing to death in the Midwest during winter, huddled on the ground under a thin blanket and waking up half-buried in snow. She hadn’t seen a snowflake in nearly a decade, and the nights here never fell below fifty degrees.

Feeling dizzy, she leaned against the building and tucked her chin against her chest. She removed her cap to feel the bump on her head. It was bigger than ever and the pain was unrelenting. Finally, feeling that she could no longer stand without fainting, she decided to go inside and ask Bleeker if she could take a few hours off.

Before she reached the door, she saw someone approaching from within. She grabbed the handle and pulled the door open for…Annie. She looked gorgeous as usual, dressed in casual clothes today, a pair of black pants and a red cloth coat with a collar of black velvet. Her orange-red earrings matched her lipstick.

“Good morning, Donovan,” she said, clutching a black pocketbook under her arm.

“Good morning, Mrs. Sterling. Is the valet bringing your car? Or will you need a taxi?”

“Neither. I’m going for a walk. It’s chilly this morning, isn’t it?” She laughed lightheartedly. “I mean for Southern California! Back home in Nebraska we’d call this a winter heat wave.” She peered into Mutt’s face, her expression one of concern. “Are you feeling okay, Donovan? You look frighteningly pale.”

Mutt opened her mouth to reply. Nothing but a clipped croak came out. Then she felt her knees buckle.
